The New Album From Storm Warning - Something Real

The new Storm Warning album, 'Something Real', has been getting good reviews and radio plays across the UK on specialist blues programmes and BBC local radio.

The recording took place at the same studios as 'Breaking Out'  and co produced with engineer Martin Atkinson who has worked on recent JSP label CDs by Buddy Guy, Lucky Peterson and Deborah Coleman.

“Clever, complex and compelling…this is a progressive album that sounds relatively distinct from any predecessors. An impressive assured set.” –  Rating 8 -  Blues in Britain magazine

Storm Warning on the Classic Rock Cover CD

The October issue of Classic Rock magazine is on sale now and has Storm Warning's 'Hard To Be A Man' track on the cover CD along with Joe Bonamassa, Oli Brown and Megadeth!

You can buy this magazine at most newsagents or visit www.classicrockmagazine.com

"Soulful gut-bucket groove that’s half hard times, half good-time-all-the-time…..they delve deep into breezy jazz, fiery rock or smoky R&B, but the blues always call them back.” Classic Rock magazine

Here is one of the latest reviews from Something Real;

STORM WARNING - “Something Real” (Phil Jackson)

Storm Warning is a band that has obviously absorbed a lot of influences mostly rooted in classic blues- as it says in the promotional flier a lot of the numbers on ‘Something Real’ sound like standards.

It’s also nice to hear a keyboard player in a blues band and Ian Salisbury does his fair share of work adding a synth line here such as on the 7 minute opener ‘On The Road’ (Very much in the style of Rory Gallagher with tongue in cheek lyrics- once a bluesman, always a blues man I suppose!) and an electric piano or piano break there (for example on ‘Charlie’s Blues and  ‘Blues 101’ where Bob Moore’s soaring guitar breaks are also highlights).

One thing I haven’t mentioned yet is singer Son Maxwell’s harmonica that sounds fantastic throughout. I was looking forward to hearing the two longest numbers to see how such a tight and proficient band would ‘fill the space’ and I was not disappointed. The slow burning blues of the title track is 9:37 is right on the nail and puts succinctly into words what many of us feel about the shallowness and sensationalism of the media contrasting it with ‘something I can use’, something more substantial i.e. the blues! The list of artists that forms the ‘medication when I need a dose of the truth’ proves the range of classic influences alluded to in my opening remarks.

The second longest number is a solid 8:20 rendition of ‘Nothing But Smoke’ played with great subtlety (But not missing the point!) with some more great guitar work.

Instrumentally organ is used more and more as the album progresses to provide some simmering ‘fills’ on the title track and in a more upfront way on the upbeat ‘One Step Forward’, sounding for all the world like a lost Rory Gallagher classic with Moore on top form on guitar.

Harmonica growls at the beginning of ‘I Don’t Know’ (then solos later on), the organ is back (also soloing) and some jazzy guitar accompanies another toe tapper (with a solo of course!)

Storm Warning are on a winner here with a classic of blues influences, mostly modern but also capturing an authentic blues spirit from the past. Their playing borders on the empathic and the rhythm section of Derek White and Roger Willis holds the whole thing together well.

I haven’t even mentioned my own favourite number yet, a kind of antidote to the strident feminism prevalent in the blues (not unwelcome!) It’s entitled ‘Hard To Be A Man’ and that is all I need to say.

‘Something Real’ is an outstanding album of blues rock that demands the widest exposure.

Storm Warning at Darlington

On the first visit to the Darlington R&B Club, Storm Warning packed out the club and the band seem to make a big impression on the crowd. A great response and hopefully be back in Darlington next year. Pictures from the gig below;

Thanks Bottleneck Blues Club

Storm Warning played the Bottleneck Blues Club at the Roffen in Rochester on Tuesday 29th January to a packed club. Recently numbers at the club haven't been so good and they hadn't had such a crowd since Ian Siegal played sometime ago. So thanks to everyone for turning out on a Tuesday night in January and of course thanks to Richard Dobney the organiser for booking the band. This is what he said in his email after the gig;

Storm Warning presented a beautifully crafted set, weaving an intoxicating mix of the traditional with jazzier and rockier elements to keep momentum through to the inevitable encore. They've certainly hit the nail on the head in designing this set of, principally, original material and this fresh approach, expertly executed by a great team of musicians, was more than appreciated by the members, indeed the feedback received, both at the event and follow up e-mail, has been quite phenomenal!

New Review

The debut album 'Breaking Out' still continues to attract attention. We had an email from a new friend in the US, John Gibson. Visit this blues blog to read his review of 'Breaking Out.' http://bluesreview.blogspot.com

Rawa Blues Festival Poland 2007

Storm Warning played the Rawa Blues Festival in Poland on 6th October and were very well received by the Polish audience. The band had extensive media coverage before and during the festival. The large crowd took the Storm Warning's music as they played a rocking set which was recorded for TV. The band shared the bill with Janvia Magness or the Ayslum Street Spankers. Both were great on and off stage. Our thanks go to Ired Dudek for his superb organising of the festival and his hospitality. Also thanks to Martyna and Magda our guides or looked after us, radio DJs Ryszard Gloger and Przemek Draheim and all the Polish people we met and who have emailed us with their kind words.

Storm Warning in Holland

Storm Warning had some very good gigs in Holland. The band played at some great blues clubs and were looked after by the promoters and hosts. The audiences really liked the music and all the people were very friendly. Every night they played several encores and the owner of Cafe Koster wouldn't let the band finish until they had played Bullets again. It also helped that all spoke some English. And we had never seen so many bikes! Tour photos will be on the site soon. A big thanks  goes to Storm Warning fans Graham and Roger who drove the gear to Holland and followed the band round selling some CDs in between.  The band also met Richard from Metropolitan Booking Agency and he is working on getting Storm Warning back to Holland soon.

Great Response From Colne

Storm Warning played at The Great British R&B Festival in Colne over the August Bank Holiday weekend and went down a storm. There were a few photographers at the festival and here is Blues Pics pictures of Storm Warning . Have a look http://www4.webng.com/bluesxx/col07storm.htm

Storm Warning & The Hamsters

An unlikely match but Storm Warning supported the Hamsters on Thursday (12th April) and got great applause from the audience. The more rockier numbers from the set were chosen and were well appreciated. Slim, guitarist with The Hamsters,  particularly liked 'The Woman? Or The Blues?' so we'll have to see if it appears in The Hamsters set. Thanks to The Hamsters and The Court Theatre in Tring, Herts.  And thanks to those Storm Warning fans who turned up. See the Guestbook to see Malcolm Preskett's comment on the gig

Storm Warning on a US Sampler

Network Pacific Record company based in Eureka, California  chose a Storm Warning track to go onto their Blues sampler cd. After hearing Breaking Out this is what they said about the band

"Your tunes are very interesting (such a nice change from the standard 12 bar "sounded like all the others" demos). Great writing, arrangements, and musicianship. We were taken with the last tune on your cd. It is one of the most unique blues cuts we have listened to."

The last track being 'Whisky Blues' is on the cd amongst bands from the US and Europe. The cd is available across the US. To buy the cd visit www.networkpacificrecords.com
